Double Feature: An Arbiter + Red Mist Logbook Entries

O sorrow, I have ended, you see, by respecting you, because I am certain you will never leave me.

A simple game of chess.

Knight to f6. Bold.

Pawn to d5.

Bishop to g4. You're mine now.

Nothing matters but taking the King.

Knight to g4. Takes Bishop. Let it have the fodder.

I take Pawn after Pawn. Even their Rooks and Bishops fall to me.

Knight to e5. It dares stand in my way?

I shall not dirty my hands. Let it have an honorable death.

Knight to d3. Takes Rook. Why will you not just lay down and die?

Knight to c5. Takes Knight.

Knight to b3. Takes Knight.

Fine. I will deal with this myself.

Knight to d4.

Finally, we meet.

Knight waves its pathetic sword at me. Impudence.

I take the Knight's arm. This will make a fine trophy.

Knight falls to its knees.

Only an honest death will cure you now.

Queen takes Knight.

Knight takes Queen.

Impossible. IMPOSSIBLE.

That BITCH DARES TO STAND AGAINST ME?

AN ARBITER WILL NOT LOSE TO SOME COMMON STREET TRASH LIKE Y-

O my sorrow, you are better than a well-beloved: because I know that on the day of my final agony, you will be there, lying in my sheets, O sorrow, so that you might once again attempt to enter my heart.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------

A banging noise jolts me awake.

An employee blasts through my door and slumps over. I catch, well, what's left of him, and hear his last words. Tells me everyone else is dead. That I should run.

Like hell I am! I'm protecting whoever's left. Only I can do this. I have to.

What the hell could have even attacked us?

I get my answer before I can even finish the thought.

A puff of smoke wafts past and a Claw follows swiftly after it.

Some streams of blood run down my jacket, and I begin to understand how serious this attack is.

Someone high up wants us gone. And someone inside told them how to make it happen.

No time to worry about that.

I grab my sword and gather whatever EGO is left. I'm gonna need everything this lab's got to deal with whoever's knocking on our doors.

The Claw rushes past again, but I'm not going to get caught a second time. I split it widthwise as it takes another swing at me.

Fool me once.

No surprise, the Claw was far from our only visitor.

Plenty more, and judging by the sounds coming from upstairs, there's an even bigger fish swimming around.

I failed my job too many times today, but they are not killing us all. Not while I still draw breath.

I have to protect them.

This is the only thought in my mind as I carve my way through the intruders and the monsters. Ignore the pain. Deal with that later.

I have to protect them.

With an ocean of blood and bodies in my wake I see her. The Arbiter. Standing around the corpses of my friends and colleagues.

That smug look on her face sets my blood on fire.

I have to protect them.

I swing at her, but she deflects it, and strikes back.

I go to swing my sword again, but nothing happens. I look down and see blood spurting out of a stump where my arm was.

Deal with that later.

She will NOT get past me.

I take another hit. This one's bad. I can feel whatever guts I have left spilling out of me.

The Arbiter prattles on about "An honest death" and "Being honorable"

I have to protect them.

She's getting whatever I've got left. Pick up my sword, jam it straight through her. Feel it grind against all that fancy tech she's got embedded in her.

I'm not going down alone.

She joins me slumped over on the floor. I can feel the rage boiling out of her, even more than the blood. Good. Can't help but smile.

They're not gonna have us all.

At least I was able to protect someone.
